The Lonely Planet had strongly recommended we get an air con bus for the one hour ride to Sukhothai. There were so many buses going every which directon we were glad for the advice. Check out the TV set and the fancy bunting and all.
I got the second to last seat on the bus. The only empty seat was next to me and I felt pretty lucky. I would be able to relax just a bit and put my pack up on the seat for more leg room.
Dream on. That was how we learned about Thai buses. They leave when they are full.
So we all waited, watching our driver out there trying to hussle up that one last customer. He was competing with all the other drivers!
Finally he nabs a big German backpacker. A really big and very sweaty fellow wearing a tank top who, of course, sat next to me. Ugh. It was a tight squeeze. My shirt sleeve quickly became damp from his bare arm. And I'm sorry to say he didn't smell very good.
On the other hand he was heading North and had been to Bangkok and I pumped him for information. He made Bangkok sound fun and do-able and had a good map. He was nice and very talkative. He had ze good English too. I was glad for his company.
