Our train pulled into the butt ugly town of Phitanulok where we caught a bus to the almost as ugly town of Sukhothai. It was about an hour bus ride to Sukhothai and a taxi ride out to our guest house in Old Sukhothai, which is not a town as much as a litle village adjacent the ruins.
It hadn't sounded so bad, reading about this jaunt in The Lonely Planet. It was actually the biggest test of our fortitude to date. It was dreadfully hot and humid and the air was thick with smoke from all the burning going on in the rice fields.
Actually, without The Lonely Planet we would have been in trouble.
